Sunday 3rd August marked an exciting milestone for Norwich Pétanque Club as we hosted our very first Junior Coaching Session — and what a fantastic start it was!

Children and adults play a game of petanque on a gravel field surrounded by trees. Colorful markers are scattered on the ground. The mood is playful.

Held from 5:30pm to 7:00pm, the session welcomed 10 enthusiastic juniors (out of the 12 originally booked, with two unable to attend due to illness), ranging in age from 7 to 13 years old.

Colorful cones arranged on a gravel ground with green hedges in the background. Blue, red, green, yellow cones form patterns. Peaceful setting.

To ensure everyone received age-appropriate coaching and plenty of individual attention, the juniors were split into three training groups:

  • Group A – Age 7

  • Group B – Ages 8–9

  • Group C – Ages 10–13

Children play petanque on gravel with colorful cones marking lanes. Two adults observe. Green trees in the background, casual, outdoorsy vibe.

Each group took part in three coaching sessions, with two short breaks in between for refreshments and fun. The programme was carefully structured to introduce key pétanque skills through enjoyable games and activities, helping the juniors build confidence, coordination, and teamwork.

The session was expertly led by Club Coach Mark Bell, with fantastic support from coaching assistants Sharon Thorndyke and Lesley Munday, whose enthusiasm and guidance helped create a friendly, welcoming atmosphere throughout the evening.

We’ve already received brilliant feedback from both the juniors and their parents, many of whom commented on how much their children enjoyed the experience. In fact, every participant has already signed up for the next session on Sunday 7th September — and we’re fully booked once again!

People socialize and play games outdoors on a lawn beside a white building. Picnic tables, scattered toys, and casual attire set a relaxed mood.

Due to this growing demand, we’re now looking for additional coaching assistants to help expand the sessions and welcome even more young players to the sport. If you're interested in getting involved and supporting the next generation of pétanque players, please get in touch!

My son had his first Pétanque session on Sunday 3rd August and he loved it. We find it hard to get our son into anything being ADHD/ASD but this he loves. It keeps him calm and focused which can sometimes be a challenge. Mark and his team are fantastic they are all friendly and include everyone. Highly recommend.
