A Fantastic Day of Pétanque at the Thorndyke Cup

Norwich Pétanque Club welcomed 12 players for the female-only Thorndyke Cup on Saturday 3rd October.

The competition was played as a mêlée, with partners and opponents changing throughout four timed games. The format produced a wonderful atmosphere, with players describing the day as friendly and competitive—without becoming too serious—allowing everyone to relax and enjoy their pétanque.

Sylvia Hart produced an excellent performance to finish as the only player with four victories, winning the Thorndyke Cup with a points difference of +23.

Jan Hegarty claimed the runner-up spot with three wins and a points difference of +19. Two other players also recorded three victories: Liz Read finished on +16, while Marion Fitt completed the day on +7.

The club was also delighted to see 10-year-old junior Effie take part in her first competition against adults. She performed brilliantly, recording two wins and a points difference of −9. Just as importantly, her fellow competitors described her as a pleasure to play with—a fantastic achievement in her first adult competition.

It was also great to see so many of the club’s male members at the terrain, cheering on the players and showing their support throughout the day.

A big thank you must go to Gavin and Sally for getting the terrain looking its best for the competition, and to Sharon and Hedley for organising and running another excellent event.

One Final Competition

The club’s final competition of the season takes place on Wednesday 7th October and will be another mêlée, held in memory of Derek Glanville.

Registration opens at 10:00am, with play beginning at 10:30am. We hope to see plenty of players there as we bring another enjoyable competition season to a close.
