Rain Didn’t Stop Play: Our Day at the Priscilla Bacon Summer Fayre

After a grey and soggy start to Saturday 19th July, things weren’t looking too hopeful for Norwich Petanque Club’s “Come and Try” stall at the Priscilla Bacon Summer Fayre. With the weather threatening to wash us indoors — and take the boules with it — we braced ourselves for a very different kind of afternoon.

But then, just in time, the sun came out and the clouds cleared, letting the event go ahead as planned!
Our stall, run by club members Alison Burrows and Lesley Munday, was buzzing with interest throughout the afternoon. Visitors of all ages stopped by to have a go at playing pétanque — many for the very first time. There were some seriously promising throws and lots of enthusiasm. We even had a few people keen to come along to a Wednesday club night and give it a proper go — so keep an eye out for some fresh faces on the terrain soon.

Lesley, who not only helped run the day but also liaised with the Priscilla Bacon charity to secure our stall, also had a great chat with a local U3A group about a possible future session — Hopefully more news on that to come.

A big thank you goes to Ali and Lesley for representing the club so warmly and giving up their time to share the joy of pétanque with others. And of course, thank you to the Fayre organisers for having us and making sure we were well-prepared for all weather, gazebo and all.

Let’s hope for more sunny afternoons, more curious players, and more chances to grow our friendly pétanque community!
