On Wednesday 1st October 2025, Norwich Pétanque Club proudly hosted the inaugural Glanville Trophy tournament — a heartfelt tribute to our dear friend, member, and former chairman Derek Glanville, who sadly passed away at the end of last year.

The event was a resounding success, drawing in 19 teams from across Norfolk and Suffolk to compete in a spirited day of pétanque, camaraderie, and remembrance. In a special gesture, all players competed for trophies that had previously been won by Derek himself — generously donated to the club by his family.

Derek’s widow, Audrey Glanville, joined us on the day to watch the matches and graciously presented the winners and runners-up with their prizes. Audrey also shared that the £180 raised during the tournament will be used to purchase a new trophy, helping to make the Glanville Trophy a permanent annual fixture in the club’s calendar — a lasting legacy in Derek’s honour.
The tournament proved incredibly close. Both the winning and runner-up teams finished with three wins each and a +28 points difference, so it all came down to total points scored. By just two points,

the victory went to Jallal Talbi & Allen Kemp,

with Lou D’Esposito & Peter Astle taking the runner-up spot.
A huge thank you to everyone who came along, supported the day, and made it such a special occasion — your presence and participation truly honoured Derek’s memory. And of course, a heartfelt thanks to the organisers and volunteers whose hard work behind the scenes makes events like these possible. We couldn’t do it without you.
It was a morning full of friendly competition, fond memories, and community spirit — exactly the kind of event Derek would have loved. We look forward to building on this legacy and making the Glanville Trophy a cherished tradition for years to come.
