COTTAGE PIE THE NEWSLETTER OF NORWICH PĖTANQUE CLUB norwich-petanque.co.uk

June 2016

COMPETITION UPDATE

The Andree Conan Pairs is our next Club competition, taking place on Wednesday 6th July. Registration is from 7pm for a strict 7.30pm start. This competition is open to those over 18 only and there are bottles of wine for the competition winners. Format is fixed pairs, playing 3 timed games. This takes the place of our usual Club night melee.

Just a reminder that your first round of Singles games should be completed by the end of June and all cards returned to the Secretary by Friday 1st July at the latest to allow for the quarter final draw to take place. Thank you to those who have already returned their scorecards. There is an envelope pinned to the noticeboard inside the shed if you wish to deposit yours there – you don't need to wait to see me!

If you have not yet arranged your remaining games, please pick up the phone and make contact with your opponents so that you have any outstanding matches arranged well in time for the end of the month.

EVENT ROUNDUP

A disappointing turnout in May for this event, with only 15 competitors taking part. A fairly close result saw Ian Hubbard coming out as winner on +21, with Enzo Diprata 2nd on +17 and David Rome in 3rd on +14.

As our Club Championship, this should be the prestige event of our season, but this event is consistently poorly supported. With the melee format any player entering has an equal chance of winning, so please, next year JUST COME AND HAVE A GO!

The Gold Cup Pairs was much better attended as it is and open competition that attracts players from other Clubs, with half of the 12 teams taking part representating other Clubs.

The event was won by

James Urquart and Curtis Hoy from the St Faiths Club, with 4 wins and +31,

with Robert Cleaver and Brian Taylor in 2nd place on 3 wins and +17 and Tony D'Esposito and Rosie Creamer from the Bob Carter Club in 3rd place on 3 wins and +16. Congratulations to all competitors.

17 players have so far completed the required 6 games to qualify for the Melee table. Robert Cleaver is in the lead on +55, with Merv Bell in 2nd place on +22 and Ian Hubbard, Derek Glanville and Kerry Kirkbride tying for 3rd on +14. The competition will no doubt hot up as more members qualify. A full results table is attached so you can all see how you are faring and you can see an update every week on the club website.

MONEY MELEE

We rang the changes a bit with our Clubnight Bank Holiday Money Melee on 1st June. A good turnout saw 22 members competing, with David Rome scooping 1st prize and Robert Cleaver and Ian Hubbard sharing 2nd place.

We will be holding another Money Melee in the Bank Holiday week at the end of August (Weds 31st), so make a note and come along – the more taking part, the more there is to win!.

SWEEPSTAKE DRAW

The Club runs a monthly sweepstake draw that is open to all (not just limited to Club members). Cost is £1 per month and we draw 1st and 2nd prizes each month, which can vary in value with the number of people taking part, with the balance going to the Club each month.

The June prizes were won by - 1st Mark Bell, 2nd Hedley Watts.

This sweepstake has been run by Colin Debbage for 7 years now and has contributed over £500 to Club funds over the years. Colin has however decided to step down from this role and Robert Cleaver has now taken on this responsibility.

MANY THANKS TO COLIN FOR ALL HIS EFFORTS OVER THE YEARS AND FOR all HIS CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE CLUB.

If you would like to take part in this draw to support the Club (and have the chance of winning a bit of cash!), please speak to Robert and he will arrange for you to be included (robertcleaver1949@gmail.com, or contact Robert at the terrain most Wednesday Club nights).
