There is lots of information about our forthcoming plans for the new season in this newsletter. Please read carefully, make a note of dates and if you have any queries please do not hesitate to get in touch.
UPCOMING EVENTS
April marks the start of our Petanque Summer season. Attached to this newsletter is a full list of the Season's tournaments and significant Club dates.
Make a note, put the list on your kitchen pinboard, put the dates in your diary, just turn up and join in!
We run our tournaments for all Club members so we look forward to seeing lots of you at our events over the Summer season. We especially appreciate the support for our charity events and hope members will continue to give their valuable contribution to these events.
CLUB SINGLES
We will again be running our individual Ladies and Gents Singles as a season-long event. The format will consist of games to be played on dates arranged at the convenience of each set of opponents, with mini-leagues between 1st April and 30th June, followed by Quarter Finals in July, Semi Finals in August, with the Finals to be played on an agreed date in September. Further details will follow when the initial Leagues have been drawn up.
THIS EVENT WILL AUTOMATICALLY INCLUDE ALL CLUB MEMBERS REGISTERED AT 1ST APRIL 2016 UNLESS YOU SPECIFICALLY ADVISE THAT YOU DO NOT WISH TO BE INCLUDED. If you do NOT wish to take part please advise Heather Hubbard by 30th March. (email: hihubb@virginmedia.com, tel: 01603 701023). Equally, if you have not yet renewed your membership please let Hedley Watts have your renewal fee asap.
We have designed this tournament to be played on flexible dates so that all Club members have the opportunity to take part, not just those who are able to turn up to weekend events, or Wednesday Clubnight. Last year's competition certainly threw up some interesting results, so we hope you will all enjoy this slightly different singles event.
EVENT ROUNDUP
WINTER MONEY MELEE
Tony D'Esposito was the winner of the February Winter Money Melee with Kerry Kirkbride in 2nd place.
Unfortunately our March game, which would have been the final one for the winter season, had to be cancelled because of adverse weather – ie it was tipping it down with rain!
We will no doubt run these events again over next winter.
QUIZ & CHILLI EVENING
We had a great turnout for this event this year with 10 teams taking part, which led to a lively evening and some good-humoured competition. Many thanks to our Quizmasters, Tony and Janet Brenchley who had clearly worked very hard to produce all the questions and referee all the answers!
The Quiz was won this year by Bean There, consisting of Helen D'Esposito, Di Cunningham and Len Ellis (pictured left), who won with their team of just 3 people.
In 2nd place was Bean Stupid (Tony D'Esposito, Jaki Cocker, Sonia Paternoster and Kath Howe).
Congratulations to all the teams who took part.
TERRAIN MAINTENANCE
Many thanks to the hardy bunch of members who turned up in the cold and rain to help shovel and rake the 5 tonnes of new gravel delivered to the terrain.
Most are pictured here, but thanks also to David Rome and Tony Brenchley who had left to find somewhere warm & dry before the picture was taken!
We hope that members appreciate the improvements that have been made to the terrain recently and more importantly help us keep the terrain in good condition by raking after it has been used. Our terrain is heavily used and it will only revert to its impacted state if members do not help to keep the gravel raked.
PETANQUE WEEKEND TRIP
We are still able to take bookings for the Isle of Wight Tours Fun Petanque Weekend trip planned for 14th - 17th October 2016. The trip includes all coach & ferry travel, transport to/from the tournament venue, bed & breakfast accommodation and evening entertainment at the Ocean View hotel, Shanklin. Cost is £185 per person, with a £20 per person deposit required. If anybody wishes to travel by their own car for the event Isle of Wight Tours will provide the car ferry ticket within this price.
